Area B | Molecular Biotechnology and HealthCoordinator | Euclides PiresGeneral ObjectivesLiving organisms are built of interacting components whose correct function or dysfunction leadsrespectively to health or disease conditions. Understanding interactions, from the molecular level to thesystem level, is a tremendous task crucial to the design of strategies capable of correcting dysfunction. The Biotechnology and Health Line of CNC has been “shapped” steadly by hiring young scientists withthe competence to investigate interactions at different levels and apply this know ‐ how to a selected set ofpathologies. At present this Line comprises five research groups whose general objectives are: 1) unvealclusters of genes associated with some diseases; 2) exploit design principles in metabolic networks; 3)investigate molecular interactions as well protein folding and unfolding using computationalmethodologies; 3) search, structural characterization and kinetics of proteases with biomedical orbiotechnological interest; 5) development of viral and non‐viral drug carriers; 6) development ofbiomaterials for stem cell‐based therapeutics; 7) development of a technological platform to generate newmodels of human CNS diseases.Main Achievements• A generic approach for characterizing and quantifying global tolerance of Biochemical systems wasproposed.• A computational tool for integrated visualization of protein interaction networks and RNA expressionwas devised.31• A prototype for a public open platform to share protein folding and unfolding was developed.• New data mining tools for analysis of multiple protein folding and unfolding simulations started to bedeveloped.• The most common and abundant allergenic pollens were shown to contain serine and/oraminopeptidase activity which is instrumental in degrading intercellular adhesion proteins.• A novel lipid – based nanosystem that has the potential to target the microenvironment of human breasttumor was developed.• A new approach for delivery of vascular growth factors into embryonic stem cells was established.• New nanomaterials for drug release and cell tracking were developed.Future ResearchPatents/prototypes“Human embryoid bodies containing nano‐ and micro‐particulate delivery vehicles” Ferreira, L., Kohane,D., Langer, R.
