MICROSCOPY UNITHead of Unit: Luísa Cortes | PhD in Enzymology (2006) at University of CoimbraHead of Facility since 2007The Microscopy Unit provides technicalsupport on the investigation made usingLight Microscopy. Besides managing theresources, the unit assists in planningmicroscopy oriented projects, analysingexperimental results, processing acquiredimages and presenting data.Presently, the unit manages a laserscanning confocal microscope (Zeiss LSM510 Meta), a P.A.L.M. lasermicrodissecting microscope, a single cellcalcium imaging system, 2 widefieldsystems and other brightfieldmicroscopes. The systems are preparedfor advanced applications which includelive cell imaging and single cell calciummeasurements, enabling the researchersof imaging dynamic events and molecularinteractions. The P.A.L.M. laser dissecting microscopeis a perfect tool for the isolation ofdifferent cell populations within a sample, allowing its full characterization. Usingthis technology, collaboration has beenestablished, with the service ofAnatomical Pathology from the FMUC,with the aim of studying the differencesof gene expression between tumour cellsat diverse stages.P.A.L.M. laser microdissecting microscopeLaser scanning confocal microscope127
