90three layers <strong>of</strong> gauze it was found unsatisfactory, as the gases had atendency to burn back in the chambers, having taken the gauze out again,we attempted to dissolve, when the tubing was blown violently <strong>of</strong>f, stillleaving one jet burning At this point the lacquer <strong>of</strong> the ether saturatorwas becoming darker at the end nearest <strong>lantern</strong>, (which was connectedby lo feet <strong>of</strong> tubing to the dissolver), a pro<strong>of</strong> that the saturator wasalightinside, after turning the oxygen <strong>of</strong>f at the cylinder, <strong>and</strong> making anexamination <strong>of</strong> the saturator, it was found that about 3 inches <strong>of</strong> thewoollen packing had been on fire, <strong>and</strong> melted the piece <strong>of</strong> metal thatruns through the centre.<strong>The</strong> same saturator has been used since with suitable jets, <strong>and</strong> givensatisfaction. It will be seen from the above trial, that ordinary jets willnot do for use with ether. Remove the nozzles (the small screw caps,) <strong>and</strong> pour backthe surplus Ether into bottle through a small funnel which will receivethe ether from both cylinders at once, drain a few seconds, <strong>and</strong> screw ontightly small caps to nozzles to prevent leakage.It is now ready for use.To connect to the Jet or Dissolver <strong>of</strong> the Lantern.—Procurea T <strong>of</strong> brass, connect the long end with the tubeing leading from the oxygenbag, then connect one <strong>of</strong> the ends <strong>of</strong> the T with one <strong>of</strong> the nozzles <strong>of</strong>the saturator, <strong>and</strong> the other end <strong>of</strong> T being connected with the oxygenside <strong>of</strong> dissolver, connect the ether tube to hydrogen side <strong>of</strong> dissolverin the same manner, <strong>and</strong> the whole is ready for use.Precautions.— Be sure that the saturator is ivell supplied ivith etherbefore starting the Lanterns.Turn on the ether side <strong>of</strong> jet first, <strong>and</strong> as soon as you smell the etherlight up. <strong>The</strong>n turn on the oxygen side gendy <strong>and</strong> adjust the amount<strong>of</strong> gases until the best effect is<strong>and</strong> steady illumination.Keep a moderate pressure on the bag.obtained, which should be a most brilliant
