169single light box is very misleading : with a good jet one box may bemade to give as much light as is obtained from two boxes in some <strong>of</strong> thetheatres ; it is sometimes thought that one light box will give the sameillumination as seen in some <strong>of</strong> our large theatres. In Drury Lanetheatre, in some <strong>of</strong> the spectacular scenes, there are forty boxes goingat one time. A tableau cannot be lighted too much, <strong>and</strong> care must betaken when the lights are at the side to illuminate the front <strong>of</strong> thefigures as much as possible, otherwise there will be heavy shadows. Itis important that all other stage lights be lowered, if the full effect <strong>of</strong> thelimelight is to be obtained.In tinting or colouring a tableau by the aid <strong>of</strong> coloured glasses orgelatine, light tints only should be used, as a great deal <strong>of</strong> light isobstructed by this means. When more than one colour is thrown on asingle figure, care should be taken that the colours do not obliterateeach other <strong>and</strong> produce white, as is <strong>of</strong>ten the case, i.e., a red <strong>and</strong> blue <strong>of</strong>the correct tints when superimposed produce ivhite light, according to awell known law in optics.GHOSTILLUSION.Fig. 70-
