(Fig,59.)—This reading stand and desk isportable and folds up in a small compass. The three projecting legs formingthe basis, fold flat against the side of the main rod,tothe socket holdingthese, slides up the main rod carrying the collapsable legs with it.Whenfitting up for use, care should be taken to place the socket at the extremeend of the rod, before fastening with the thumb screw, if the thumb screwis fastened on any other part of the rod, it will cause a dent, and as thisis telescopic, there is a trouble to withdraw the inner rod. The otherportions seem simplicity itself.SCIENTIFIC DEMONSTRATING LANTERNS FOR INSTITUTEAND COLLEGE WORK.This form of projecting lantern (Fig. 60) is certainly preferable to anyother for scientific and technical lectures, as any small piece of apparatusor mechanism can be thrown on the screen with distinctness, slides anddiagrams being shown in the usual manner. The late Mr. Lant Carpenter,was the first to make this class of lantern popular. The original lanternof this type being of German manufacture, and a very flimsy and gingerbreadpiece of work, compared to the present form, which is much usedfor the popular Science lectures, at the old Victoria Theatre, in theWaterloo Road, London. It was also used by Mr. Preece, to illustratehis lectures on " Electricity " to juveniles at the Society of Arts, andby Professor Forbes at Manchester before The British Association, whenvisiting that city.
