Summary<strong>Cohort</strong> <strong>mortality</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Sweden</strong>100 born and 3 girls out of 100 born had died. Among those born <strong>in</strong>1924, half of the women were alive at age 83, and among men bornthe same year, half of them were alive at age 76.Men born <strong>in</strong> 1861 had an average life expectancy of 46 years, whilethe correspond<strong>in</strong>g figure for women was age 49. The difference <strong>in</strong>average life expectancy was thus 3 years. For the cohorts born <strong>in</strong>1910, average life expectancy had <strong>in</strong>creased to 62 for men and 68 forwomen, a difference of 6 years.The <strong>mortality</strong>death rate has not only decreased among youngerpersons but also <strong>in</strong> later years among older persons. At age 65, therema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g average life expectancy for those born <strong>in</strong> 1830 was 14years for women and 13 years for men. This level was about thesame for persons born <strong>in</strong> 1870. However, the fall<strong>in</strong>g death<strong>mortality</strong>risks for the younger cohorts have resulted <strong>in</strong> a rise <strong>in</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gaverage life expectancy for 65 year-olds. For those born <strong>in</strong> 1910, therema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g average life expectancy at age 65 was 19 years for womenand 15 years for men. For those born after 1910, the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gaverage life expectancy can not yet be calculated, but it is certa<strong>in</strong>lylikely that the ris<strong>in</strong>g trend will cont<strong>in</strong>ue.
