Figures 6.3 and 6.4 illustrate that the <strong>mortality</strong> ratefor the oldest cohorts only changed marg<strong>in</strong>ally from one cohort tothe next. from one cohort to the next. For <strong>in</strong>stance, the <strong>mortality</strong> ratefor those born <strong>in</strong> 1840 is very similar with the <strong>mortality</strong> rate of 1860cohort. Further, the differences <strong>in</strong> <strong>mortality</strong> between men andwomen are small. However, the <strong>mortality</strong> rate for women born after1860 began to fall more rapidly from one cohort to the next. For menthis more rapid <strong>mortality</strong> decl<strong>in</strong>e started for those born after 1900.For ages below 20, the <strong>mortality</strong> rate has fallen to very low levels forthose born <strong>in</strong> 1980 compared to the cohort born <strong>in</strong> 1900. For thoseaged 15 to 30, we see a clear excess <strong>mortality</strong> for men, sometimesreferred to as the accident prone years.Figure 6.5 illustrates a comparison of <strong>mortality</strong> rates between menand women for eight cohorts born between 1780 and 1960. Up untilthe cohort born <strong>in</strong> 1880, the levels of <strong>mortality</strong> rates were verysimilar for men and women. However, <strong>mortality</strong> rates are somewhathigher for men. For the cohorts born after 1880, the difference <strong>in</strong><strong>mortality</strong> is greater between men and women. For the cohort born <strong>in</strong>1900, there is a clear difference <strong>in</strong> the level of <strong>mortality</strong> level fromthe age of 40. Concern<strong>in</strong>g the cohorts born <strong>in</strong> the middle of the 20thcentury, the level of <strong>mortality</strong> among young people is very low.
