Cohort mortality in SwedenFacts about the statisticsFor other ages the calculation is as below:M t x = Dt x / 0.5*( Nt-1 X + Nt x+1 )To eliminate shortfalls in the presentation of the population size, theofficial population count has not been used for people over age 60.Instead, it has been replaced by a calculated population count. Thestarting point for the calculation has been the most reliableinformation, namely the number of deceased persons by age. Thecalculation has been done cohort by cohort, and has been based onthe highest observable age of deaths. For the younger cohorts, thestarting point for the calculation has been the most recentlypublished population count. The population at each age has beencalculated by gradually adding the deceased persons and the netemigration (extinct cohort method). In the previous report (Demografiska rapporter 1997:2) the mortalityrates were smoothed for cohorts born 1776–1900 for ages over 89,according to a special method. Smoothing has not been used in thisreport. Mortality rates have been calculated for each age with a riskpopulation of at least two persons.Mortality rates have been transformed to probability of death asfollows:q 0= 1 - exp(-( 0,5* M 0+ k* M 1 )q 1= 1 - exp(-((1-k)* M 1+ 0,6* M 2 )q 2= 1 - exp(-(0,4* M 2+ 0,5* M 3 )and from age 3 according to the formula:q x= 1 - exp(-(0,5* M x+ 0,5* M x+1 )k is a constant that has been placed at 0.7 for cohorts born before1890 and at 0.8 for cohorts born after 1989. For the cohorts from 1890to 1989, the constant has been calculated by linear transformation.Statistics Sweden 183
