Unreasonable information is easilyobserved for deceased persons aged 100 and above. The largest erroris noted for the 1750s. The official statistics state that the number ofdeceased persons aged 100 and above was nearly as large during the10 year period 1751 – 60 as it was during all of the 19th century-60 asduring all of the 19th century. This is obviously unreasonable.However, it is not so strange the errors can have occurred in the ageinformation. Perhaps the priests were not aware of the importanceto carefully check the age of deceased persons s. It may have beentempting to believe verbal information about person 's age,especially if that person was very old. We must also remember thatpersons who died during the middle of the 18th century and werereported to be over 100 years old were born in the middle of the 17thcentury or perhaps earlier. Information about the time of birth wasprobably based on verbal information from the person himself orherself, or someone who is closely related. As the routine tomaintain the recordsAs the church books improved and attentionwas given to the importance of correct age information in thepopulation statistics, these errors decreased. From the beginning ofthe 19th century, age statistics is of good quality. However, thedemands for statistical presentation of deceased persons before 1861only required that age was reported in five-year age groups. For higher ages, the official population information hasbeen replaced with a calculated population. One reason for this isbecause for many years, the presentation of the population size inthe official statistics had an open age interval of 90 years and olderor 95 years and older. To calculate mortality rates, information isneeded on the population size in one-year categories even for theoldest persons. The most reliable statistics we have areis theinformation on the number of deceased persons by age. Based onthe information of deceased persons (and immigrants/emigrants) byage, the population size can be calculated. The starting point for thecalculation for each birth cohort and sex has been the oldestdeceased person. It has then been possible to gradually calculate thepopulation backwards in time by adding the number of deceasedpersons and adjusting for immigration and emigration ("extinctcohort method”). For the younger cohorts, the calculation is basedon the official population size for the last presented age. For theStatistics Sweden 19
