Life expectancyFor the cohorts born <strong>in</strong> 1861 to 1910, life expectancy <strong>in</strong>creased from46 to 62 years for men and from 49 to 68 for women. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g life expectancy at age 10 for cohortborn <strong>in</strong> 1851 was 53 years for men and 55 years for women. Forcohorts born after 1851 <strong>mortality</strong> have decreased. This <strong>mortality</strong>decrease was at first slowstarted, but start<strong>in</strong>g with the cohorts bornaround 1870 the <strong>mortality</strong> decreased y beganto more rapidly,especially for women. As a result, the difference <strong>in</strong> the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>glife expectancy at age 10 between women and men <strong>in</strong>creased from 2for those born <strong>in</strong> 1851 to 5 years for those born <strong>in</strong> 1910. Therema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g average life expectancy for other ages shows a similartrend. The figure also illustrates that <strong>mortality</strong> have even decreasedamong the oldest persons. Among those born <strong>in</strong> 1781, women had arema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g life expectancy at age 80 of 5.0 years and men 4.3 years.Statistics <strong>Sweden</strong> 47
