The solidStraight line in figure 1.1 shows the cohortborn in 1890. In 1970 the cohort has reached the age of 80. Thedeathmortality rate for the cohort born in 1890 shows a U-shapedcurve with a high deathmortality rate among the youngest people(the solid line in figure 1.2). Around the age of 15, thedeathmortality rate is lowest, and then rises with increasingrisingage. A sharply increased deathmortality rate occurs at age 28 occurs.This was of course due to the Spanish flu. In 1918 the cohort born in1890 had reached age 28.From a perspective of periods, we look instead at the mortality ratesin different ages during a certain calendar year. Figure 1.2 presentsthe mortality rate by age for calendar years 1917 and 1918 (see thedotted curves). As illustrated in the figure, the mortality rate ishigher in 1918 than in 1917. Excess mortality in 1918 can be seen notonly for one age but for an entire age span from around age 5 up toage 60.
