90 39. Infanterie-Division (39th Infantry Division)The 39. Infanterie-Division was formed in July 194-2 in Elsenborn fromreserve units in Wehrkreis VI and transferred <strong>to</strong> the Flushing area ofHolland, and l<strong>at</strong>er <strong>to</strong> the Bruges, Ghent, and Antwerp areas of Belgium.In March 194-3 the division moved <strong>to</strong> the Krasnograd area of the easternfront. 44* Infanterie-Division (44th Infantry Division) 91The 44. Infanterie-Division was formed by expansion of the VienneseInfanterie-Regiment 4 after the annex<strong>at</strong>ion of Austria. It particip<strong>at</strong>edin the campaign against Poland in 1939 and in the invasion ofFrance as far as the Tours area in May 1940. In the l<strong>at</strong>ter part ofJune 1940 the division moved <strong>to</strong> the La Rochelle area for trainingand coastal defense and was transferred in April 1941 <strong>to</strong> the Kielcearea of Poland. The division <strong>to</strong>ok part in the invasion of Russiain the southern sec<strong>to</strong>r on June 22, 1941, advancing via JanoWj Lvov,Dubno, Zhi<strong>to</strong>mir, Korosten, Byshev, Poltava, and Akhtyrka <strong>to</strong> the areaeast of Kharkov. It was destroyed <strong>at</strong> Stalingrad in January 1943.In March 1943 the division was re-formed in Belgium, receiving thehonorary title "Reichsgrenadierdivision Hoch- und Deutschmeister"in May 1943. It was transferred <strong>to</strong> northeast Italy for antipartisanoper<strong>at</strong>ions in September 1943 and on November 21, 1943, the divisionbegan <strong>com</strong>b<strong>at</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ions in the Frosinone-Cassino area where itremained until the l<strong>at</strong>ter part 'of August 1944. Although no <strong>records</strong>of this division d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than August 30, 1944, are available,situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps.of Lage Siidwest and Ost show th<strong>at</strong> it withdrew fromItaly in September 1944 and arrived in November <strong>at</strong> Pecs, Hungary,for refitting.
