45. Infanterie-Division (4.5th Infantry Division) 95The 45. Infanterie-Division was formed in 1933 after the annex<strong>at</strong>ionof Austria. In September 1939 it particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the Polish campaign,and in May 194-0 in the western campaign. The division returned<strong>to</strong> Poland in April 194-1 in prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for the campaignagainst Russia, and fought in the central sec<strong>to</strong>r of the easternfront advancing <strong>to</strong> the Orel area. It suffered heavy losses duringthe winters of 194-1-42 and 194-2-4-3 east of Orel and <strong>to</strong>ok part inthe Kursk offensive in the summer of 1943. In the fall of the sameyear it was engaged in defensive b<strong>at</strong>tles along the Desna River, inthe area west of Gomel, and beti^een the Sozh and Dnieper Rivers.Although no <strong>records</strong> of this division d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than December 31,1943, are available, situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps of Lage Ost show th<strong>at</strong> it particip<strong>at</strong>edin position defense in the Bobruisk area from January <strong>to</strong>the end of June 194-4 and in the b<strong>at</strong>tle <strong>to</strong> break the Russian encirclement<strong>at</strong> Bobruisk from June 29 <strong>to</strong> July 1, 1944. In the summer of 1944the division was reorganized as the 45. Grenadier-Division and returned<strong>to</strong> Poland. In Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1944 it was redesign<strong>at</strong>ed the 45. Volksgrenadier-Divisionand <strong>to</strong>ok part in position defense in the Radomarea from Oc<strong>to</strong>ber through December 1944-.
