The forerunner of the division was formed in the winter of 1939-4-0 asthe 1. Kavallerie-Division from the 1. Kavallerie-Brigade, which hadtaken part in the campaign in Poland. The 1. Kavallerie-Divisionparticip<strong>at</strong>ed in the western campaign in May 194-0 and was transferred<strong>to</strong> the eastern front in June 194-1. It was reorganized as the 24-.Panzer-Division <strong>at</strong> Ohrdruf in November 194-1, and was moved in March19-42 <strong>to</strong> the Guer area in France for training. In May 1942 the divisionwas transferred <strong>to</strong> the southern sec<strong>to</strong>r of the eastern front,where in January 194-3 the gre<strong>at</strong>er part of the division was destroyed<strong>at</strong> Stalingrad. Remnants of the division were assembled <strong>at</strong> Stalinoand Ros<strong>to</strong>v in February 194-3 and transferred <strong>to</strong> Lisieux, France, wherethe division was reorganized. In August 194-3 it was transferred <strong>to</strong>central Italy, where it secured this area after the capitul<strong>at</strong>ion ofItaly. The division returned in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 194-3 <strong>to</strong> the southern sec<strong>to</strong>rItem24. Panzer-Pi vis ion (24th Panzer Division) 25of the eastern front where it particip<strong>at</strong>ed in defense againstRussian <strong>at</strong>tacks in the Nikopol, Krivoi Rog, Krasnograd, Dneprodzerzhinsk, and Znamenka areas. Although no <strong>records</strong> of thisdivision d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than December 31, 194-3, are available,situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps of Lage Ost show th<strong>at</strong> in January and February1944- it defended the area south of Krivoi Rog and in Marchand April it withdrew <strong>to</strong> Jassy via Voznesensk and Balta. FromApril <strong>to</strong> August it <strong>to</strong>ok part in position defense in the Jassyarea, and from August 1944 <strong>to</strong> January 1945 in defensive actionsin the Busko and Dukla areas of Poland, the Nagykoros and Egerareas of Hungary, and the Krupino area of Slovakia.
