52. Infanterie-Division -(52d Infantry Division) 115The 52. Infanterie-Division (2. Welle) was formed from reservistsin the summer of 1939. In June 1940 it-was in the Marne-Saone Canalarea of the western front. In June r 194-1 the division was transferredfrom the Dijon-Colmar area <strong>to</strong> the Lukow-Siedlce area in Poland. OnJune 22, 1941, it particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the invasion of Russia in the vicinityof Brest-Li<strong>to</strong>vsk and advanced in the central sec<strong>to</strong>r, viaSlonim, Baranovichi, Slutsk y Bobruisk, Rogachev, Rechitsa, Gomel,Mglin, Bryansk, and Zhizdra <strong>to</strong> the area east of Kaluga. From December1941 <strong>to</strong> December 1942 tha division <strong>to</strong>ok part in defensive actionswest of Kaluga, when it was transferred <strong>to</strong> the Bely area and particip<strong>at</strong>edin defensive engagements in the Smolensk and Orsha areas, whereItemit suffered heavy losses, until December 1943., Form<strong>at</strong>ion of the52. Feldausbildungs-Division began on December 20, 1943, in theBaranovichi area from remnants of the 52. Infanterie-Division.Although no <strong>records</strong> of this division d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than December•23, 1943, .are available, situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps of Lage Ost and <strong>records</strong> •of OKH, Allgemeines Heeresamt (H 37/160), MR 1315, show th<strong>at</strong> .the52, Feldausbildungs-Division was fully organized in the Glubo'koyearea by March 1944 and was redesign<strong>at</strong>ed as the 52. Sicherungs-Division on April 19, 1944.
