62 31. Infanterie-Division (31st Infantry Division)The 31. Infanterie-Di vision (l. Welle) was formed in 1934-35 byexpansion of Infanterie-Regiment 12 (Halberstadt) and Infanterie-Regiment 17 (Braunschweig) of the old Reichswehr. In September1939 the division <strong>to</strong>ok part in the campaign in Poland and in May1940 in the western campaign. In June 194-1 the division was inthe central sec<strong>to</strong>r of the eastern front. It crossed the Bug Riverin<strong>to</strong> Russia near Terespol, particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the capture of Gomeland Bryansk, and by November 1941. had advanced <strong>to</strong> Tula. In December1941- it began defensive oper<strong>at</strong>ions in the Tula, Kaluga,Yukhnov, Kirov, Vyazma, and Gzh<strong>at</strong>sk areas. Although no <strong>records</strong>of this division d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than December 31, 194-2, are avail-Itemla, Kriegstagebuch, Feldzug in Polen. Oper<strong>at</strong>ions during march movements <strong>to</strong> the Oppelnand Breslau areas; the invasion of Poland; the b<strong>at</strong>tles for Liswarta; enemy positionsalong the Warta, Widawka, and Bzura Rivers, in the Sochaczew-Uniejow andPusycza-Kampinos areas; the pursuit of the enemy across the Vistula River <strong>at</strong> GoraICalwaria; the capture of Modlin; engagements near Warsaw; the encirclement of and<strong>at</strong>tack against Warsaw; the armistice on Sep 23; the march through Warsaw; andmarch movements <strong>to</strong> entraining points in the Lodz and Liegnitz areas for transferof the division <strong>to</strong> the West. The division was subordin<strong>at</strong>e <strong>to</strong> the XI., XVI.,XV., and XIII. A.K. <strong>at</strong> various times during this period under the <strong>com</strong>mand ofGen.Lt.
