36. _Infanterie-Division (36th Infantry Division)The 36, Infanterie-Division (l. Welle) was formed during the expansionof the Army after the introduction of universal militaryservice in March 1935. In May 1940 it <strong>to</strong>ok part in the westerncampaign and was converted <strong>to</strong> the 36. Infanterie-Division (mot.)on November 1, 1940. In June 1941 it fought in the eastern campaign,northern sec<strong>to</strong>r, crossing the Baltic St<strong>at</strong>es and advancingnorthward via Pskov, Lyady, and Luga <strong>to</strong> G<strong>at</strong>china. The divisionwas transferred <strong>to</strong> the Nevel-Velizh area in September for offensiveoper<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>at</strong> Rzhev, Kalinin, and Pushkino. In 1942 and <strong>to</strong>the spring of 1943 it defended the Dukhovshchina, Yartsevo, andDemidov areas. On March 21, 1943, the division was again reorganizedas the 36. Infanterie-Division, moving <strong>to</strong> Orel in July 1943,where it fought in the Kursk offensive. The division withdrew <strong>to</strong>the Vitebsk area in September 1943, l<strong>at</strong>er transferring <strong>to</strong> theRechitsa-Rogachev area for offensive actions, and withdrew <strong>to</strong>the Berezina River in the l<strong>at</strong>ter part of 1943, Although no<strong>records</strong> of this division d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than December 31, 1943, areavailable, situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps of Lage Ost show th<strong>at</strong> it particip<strong>at</strong>edin position defense in the area south of Bobruisk from January<strong>to</strong> June 1944, when it withdrew from the eastern front. In thesummer of 1944 the division was reorganized as the 36. Grenadier-Division and moved <strong>to</strong> the Saarbriicken area in September and l<strong>at</strong>er<strong>to</strong> the Trier area.
