The 46. Infanterie-Division (l. Welle) was formed after the annex<strong>at</strong>ionof the Sudeten areas 0 It particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the Polish campaignand secured the demarc<strong>at</strong>ion line in Poland. In Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1939 thedivision was transferred <strong>to</strong> the Rhineland, and in May 194-0 it <strong>to</strong>okpart in the western campaign. It was transferred from the Toursarea <strong>to</strong> Rumania and Bulgaria in March 1941 9 then particip<strong>at</strong>ed inthe invasion and occup<strong>at</strong>ion of Yugoslavia. In the l<strong>at</strong>ter part ofJune the division x^as transferred <strong>to</strong> the southern sec<strong>to</strong>r of theeastern front, advancing <strong>to</strong> Kerch via Yampol, Krasnograd, Znamenka,Nikolaev, Armyansk, and Simferopol. In the summer of 1942 it occupiedthe Caucasus and in January 1943 began its retre<strong>at</strong> <strong>to</strong> the Izyumarea. In the fall and winter of 1943 it <strong>to</strong>ok part in defensive oper<strong>at</strong>ionsalong the Dnieper River from Dnepropetrovsk <strong>to</strong> Nikopol.46. The division particip<strong>at</strong>ed in defensive engagementsin September and Oc<strong>to</strong>ber in the Pi<strong>at</strong>ra Neamt and Sighisoaraareas of Rumania and the Nyiregyhaza area of Hungary, and was inthe Budapest area <strong>to</strong> the l<strong>at</strong>ter part of December 1944. In January1945 the division withdrew <strong>to</strong> Banska Stiavnica and Nove Zamky,Slovakia, and defended the Nove Zamky area 'until March. It was redesign<strong>at</strong>edthe 46.
