RECORDS OF GERMAN FIELD COMMANDS; DIVISIONS (Part IV)22. Infanterie-Division (22d Infantry Division)The 22. Infanterie-Division was activated in Bremen, Wehrkreis X,on August 16, 1939. It fought in Holland in May 194-0 as an airbornedivision, participated in the victory parade in Paris, andthen was transferred to Antwerp for occupation duties. The divisiontransferred to Rumania in May 194-1 and took part in the Juneinvasion of Russia in the southern sector, advancing to the Crimea.In July and August 194-2 it was transferred to Salonika, Greece,and in September and October of the same year, to Crete. (At thattime, the subordinated Grenadier-Regiment 4-7 was detached andItemtransferred to Tripoli, Libya, and was eventually destroyed inTunisia). In the spring.of 194-3 the division was reorganizedasa motorized division although it was never officially desi'g-'nated as such. Part of the division, known as "KampfgrqppeMuller," participated in-the occupation of the Dodecanese Islandsin November and December 194-3 ,and other components becameSturnibrigade Rhodes. The division evacuated Crete in the sunnerof 1944- and then engaged in antipartisan warfare 'in Greece andYugoslavia.
