Infanterie-Division was activ<strong>at</strong>ed in Bremen, Wehrkreis X,on August 16, 1939. It fought in Holland in May 194-0 as an airbornedivision, particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the vic<strong>to</strong>ry parade in Paris, andthen was transferred <strong>to</strong> Antwerp for occup<strong>at</strong>ion duties. The divisiontransferred <strong>to</strong> Rumania in May 194-1 and <strong>to</strong>ok part in the Juneinvasion of Russia in the southern sec<strong>to</strong>r, advancing <strong>to</strong> the Crimea.In July and August 194-2 it was transferred <strong>to</strong> Salonika, Greece,and in September and Oc<strong>to</strong>ber of the same year, <strong>to</strong> Crete. (At th<strong>at</strong>time, the subordin<strong>at</strong>ed Grenadier-Regiment 4-7 was detached andItemtransferred <strong>to</strong> Tripoli, Libya, and was eventually destroyed inTunisia). In the spring.of 194-3 the division was reorganizedasa mo<strong>to</strong>rized division although it was never officially desi'g-'n<strong>at</strong>ed as such. Part of the division, known as "KampfgrqppeMuller," particip<strong>at</strong>ed in-the occup<strong>at</strong>ion of the Dodecanese Islandsin November and December 194-3 ,and other <strong>com</strong>ponents becameSturnibrigade Rhodes. The division evacu<strong>at</strong>ed Crete in the sunnerof 1944- and then engaged in antipartisan warfare 'in Greece andYugoslavia.
