Infanterie-Division (l, Welle) was formed in 193.4-35 byexpansionof Infanterie-Regiment 6 (Liibeck) of the old Reichswehr.It particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the campaign against Poland in September 1939and fought in Belgium and France as far as Etampes, south of Paris,in May and June 194-0. In 194-1 it was transferred <strong>to</strong> East Prussia.From June 1941 the division particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the eastern campaignin the northern sec<strong>to</strong>r. It crossed Lithuania and L<strong>at</strong>via and enteredRussia near Opochka, advancing <strong>to</strong> the Valdai Heights southeas<strong>to</strong>f Demyansk.
