29. Infanterie-Djvision (mot.) (29th Mo<strong>to</strong>rized Infantry Division)This division (l. Welle) was formed as the 29. Infanterie-Divisionby expansion of Infanterie-Regiment 15 (Kassel) of the oldReichswehr in 1934-35. In 1937-38, when it was under control ofthe XIV. Armeekorps, it became a mo<strong>to</strong>rized division. In September1939 it <strong>to</strong>ok part in the campaign in Poland, and in May 1940 inthe western campaign. On June 22, 1941, the division invaded Russianear Siedlce and advanced <strong>to</strong> Mtsensk, particip<strong>at</strong>ing in offensiveengagements in the Baranovichi, Smolensk, Yelnya, Bryansk,Novgorod Severski, Kiev, Sevsk, Karachev, and Orel areas. FromJanuary <strong>to</strong> May 1942 it defended the Mtsensk area. Although no<strong>records</strong> of this division d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than May 31, 1942, areavailable, situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps of Lage Ost, West, and Sudwest shoitfth<strong>at</strong> it went on the offensive in the Kharkov and Morozovsk areasItemin June and July 1942 and then engaged in the b<strong>at</strong>tle <strong>at</strong> Stalingrad,where it was finally destroyed in January 1943. The divisionwas re-formed <strong>at</strong> Par., France, in 1 larch 1943 and on May 19was redesign<strong>at</strong>ed the 29. Panzergrenadier-Division. In June itwas transferred <strong>to</strong> Sicily and in August <strong>to</strong> southern Italy. FromSeptember 1943 <strong>to</strong> January 1944 the division defended the Anziobeachhead and the Cassino and Formia areas, withdrawing <strong>to</strong> Romein February and defending this area until July 1944. From July<strong>to</strong> November it <strong>to</strong>ok part in defensive engagements in the Florence,Rimini, Cesena, and Bologna areas.
