Welle) was formed in 1935-36during the expansion of the Army after the introduction ofuniversal military service in March 1935. In May 1940 it <strong>to</strong>okpart in the western campaign. The division was transferred inJune 1941 <strong>to</strong> the eastern front, central sec<strong>to</strong>r, and particip<strong>at</strong>edin b<strong>at</strong>tles from the Bug <strong>to</strong> the Qriieper, Desna, Ugra, and NaraRivers, advancing <strong>to</strong> Tarutino southwest of Moscow. Moving <strong>to</strong>Mtsensk in January 1943, it <strong>to</strong>ok part in position defense inthe Orel area until June 1943. The division withdrew <strong>to</strong> Rumania untilMay, when it was transferred <strong>to</strong> western Italy.
