130 57. Infanterie-Pivision (57th Infantry Division)The 57. Infanterie-Division was formed in the summer of 1939 fromreservists. It particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the campaign against Poland in September1939 and in the western campaign in May 194-0. In June 1941it was transferred <strong>to</strong> the southern sec<strong>to</strong>r of the eastern front, whereit fought in offensive oper<strong>at</strong>ions from Sokal, Brody, Cherkassy,Kremenchug, Poltava, Kharkov, and Oboyan <strong>to</strong> Voronezh. In the falland winter of 194-2-4-3 the division <strong>to</strong>ok part in defensive actionsand withdrew <strong>to</strong> the Lebedin-Sumy area. It suffered heavy lossesduring the summer offensive in the Belgorod-Kharkov area. AlthoughItemno <strong>records</strong> of this division d<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than June 30, 1943, areavailable, situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps of Lage Ost show th<strong>at</strong> it defended theSumy area in July and August 1943, the Lubny area in September,the Kanev area in Oc<strong>to</strong>ber and November, and the area southwes<strong>to</strong>f Cherkassy, where it was encircled in February 1944. Thedivision was re-formed in l<strong>at</strong>e April 194-4- and assigned <strong>to</strong> thecentral sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> defend the Gorki and Rogachev areas untilit was again encircled in July 194-4-.
