The form<strong>at</strong>ion of the 23 f Panzer-Division began in the Paris areaon September 21, 194-1, and was <strong>com</strong>pleted on March 14, 1942, afterwhich it was transferred <strong>to</strong> the eastern front. The division foughtnear Kharkov and subsequently in the Terek River area. =In December1942 it was transferred <strong>to</strong> the Stalingrad area. Escaping encirclement<strong>at</strong> Stalingrad in December 1943 the division withdrew <strong>to</strong> theStalino area via Bolshaya Martynovka and Ros<strong>to</strong>v and defended thisarea until the end of June 1943. From July <strong>to</strong> December 1943 it defendedthe Dmitriyevka and Makeyevka areas, then moved northward <strong>to</strong>defend Kharkov and westward <strong>to</strong> defend Krivoi Rog, and finally thedivision particip<strong>at</strong>ed in oper<strong>at</strong>ions in the Py<strong>at</strong>ikh<strong>at</strong>ki, Aleksandriya,Kremenchug, and Kirovograd areas. From April <strong>to</strong> August it particip<strong>at</strong>ed in position defensein the Jassy area.
