35. Infanterie-Division (35th Infantry Division) 75The 35. Infanterie-Division (l. Welle) was formed during theexpansion of the Army after the introduction of universal militaryservice in March 1935. In May 194-0 it fought in Holland,Belgium, and France. The division was transferred <strong>to</strong> East Prussiain April 1941 in prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for the campaign against Russia,and fought in the central sec<strong>to</strong>r in the encirclement of Smolensk,<strong>at</strong> Vyazma, and <strong>to</strong> the Istra River northwest of Moscow. It sufferedheavy losses in the winters of 1941-42 and 1942-43 in theVyazma and Gzh<strong>at</strong>sk areas and in the summer of 1943 near DorogobuzhItemon the Dnieper River front. Although no <strong>records</strong> of this divisiond<strong>at</strong>ed l<strong>at</strong>er than June 30, 1943, are available, situ<strong>at</strong>ion maps ofLage Ost show th<strong>at</strong> it particip<strong>at</strong>ed in the defense of the Smolenskarea in September and Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 1943, the Chausy area in Novemberand December, and the area between Mozyr and Bobruisk from January<strong>to</strong> June 1944.
