Labour force: the working age population (15 and over) whoare employed or looking for employment.Labour force participation rate: the proportion of the workingagepopulation who are in the labour force.Life expectancy at birth : the average number of years thatnewly-born infants would live if the mortality patterns at thetime of birth prevailed throughout the children’s lives.Life expectancy index: one of the three components of thehuman development index. The value of this index is between0 and 100. A detailed explanation on how to calculate thisindex is presented in the technical note.Literacy rate (adult): the percentage of people aged 15 yearsor over who can read and write in Latin script or other scripts.Mean years of schooling: the estimated average (mean) yearsof completed schooling for the total population aged 15 orover who have any status of educational attainment. For adetailed explanation see the technical note.Morbidity rate: the proportion of the population who sufferedfrom health problems that disturbed their daily activities overthe previous month.Non-agricultural wages: the average remuneration receivedby workers (labourers or official employees) in the nonagriculturalsector.Open unemployment: the proportion of the labour force whoare seeking employment.Poor people: the population with a monthly per capitaexpenditure less than a certain threshold referred to as the‘poverty line’.Population not expected to survive to age 40: the estimatedproportion of population that will die before reaching the ageof 40.Population with health problems: the proportion of thepopulation that has had one or more health problems duringthe previous month.Poverty line: the Indonesian rupiah value of the monthly percapita expenditure required to fulfil a minimum standard offood and non-food basic consumption.Professionals, technical workers, senior officials andmanagers: defined according to “Klasifikasi Baku JabatanIndonesia (KBJI)”.Purchasing power parity (PPP): PPP rates allow a standardcomparison of real price levels between provinces anddistricts, otherwise normal exchange rates may over- or undervaluepurchasing power as measured by adjusted real percapita consumption. At the PPP rate in the Indonesian context,one rupiah has the same purchasing power in each provinceas it has in Jakarta. The PPP is based on real per capitaexpenditure after adjusting for the consumer price index anddecreasing marginal utility using Atkinson’s formula.Purchasing power index: one of three components of thehuman development index based on purchasing power parity(PPP) adjusted by Atkinson’s formula. The index value isbetween 0 and 100. For details on how the index is calculated,see the technical note.Self-medication: household efforts at self treatment for healthproblems using modern or traditional medicines, massage, orother traditional treatments.School drop-out rate: the proportion of the population aged7-15 who are not enrolled in education at any level and havenot completed primary or junior high school.School participation rate: the proportion of the population ina certain age group (7-12, 13-15, 16-18, and 19-24) who areattending school.Total consumption: consumption of goods and servicesregardless of origin. This includes gifts and the household’sown production. In this publication, total consumption refersto monthly consumption.Underemployment: the proportion of the totallabour force working fewer than normal working hours.Undernourished children under five: also referred to aschildren underweight (suffering from moderate and severemalnutrition). Moderate malnutrition refers to the percentageof children under five who are below minus two standarddeviations from the median weight for the age of the referencepopulation. Severe malnutrition refers to the percentage ofchildren under five who are below minus three standarddeviations from the median weight for the age of the referencepopulation.Women’s share of the labour force: the number of workingwomen as a proportion of the total working age population(aged 15 and over).Women’s income share: the income contributed by women asa proportion of the total income of the population.
