HussainAbstract:Objectives To define the normal range of hematological and immunoregulatoryparameters in healthy UAE population.Methods Blood from a group of 12 medical students at UAE University in Al Ain wasanalyzed for hematological and immunoregulatory parameters using standardtechniques.Results It was found that the values obtained in this study population for the numberof T cells, the percent values and ratios of T subsets i.e., CD4 and CD8 cells also fell inthe range described for Caucasian population. Similarly the values for B and NK cellswere within the normal range described in the literature. NK activity was studied usinga modified MTT based technique and the results were comparable with those resultsby Hussain et al. 1995. There was no significant difference between male and femalestudents in any of the immunoregulatory parameters studied. However there weresignificant difference in certain hematological parameters such as RBC, hemoglobin,haemocrit, ESR and lymphocytes.Conclusion The population sample studied here is very small and homogenous. Toestablish a healthy reference range of parameters of immuno-competent cells in UAEpopulation a larger study of a heterogeneous males and females should be done.
