LloydAbstract:Objective To review the sources of the problem of road traffic accident, to discuss themagnitude of RTA in Al Ain - UAE and to compare the situation with that of some Gulfand developed countries.Methods Analysis was based on patient admissions into the main referral central andteaching hospitals, categorizing RTA trauma. Only patients presenting alive andtreated inpatients were considered. Tawam and Al Ain Hospitals and directorate oftraffic department were the settings. All RTA traumas who were seen at TawamHospital, during 1992- 1995, and Al Ain Hospital, during 1992-1993, were thesubjects.Main outcome measures Morbidity associated with the RTA.Results Three- fourths of all patients were under 35 years of age (75%). The greatmajority of the victims were males (84%). Asian nationals comprised over 35% andUAE nationals formed 30%. It is noteworthy that over 40% suffered from head andneck injuries.Conclusion RTA casualties represented a significant public health problem and a majorhealth problem.Recommendation A persistent need is there for a substantial and prompt increase inthe provision of health educational programs aiming to reduce the frequency andmagnitude of RTA in Al-Ain.
