Oyejide, Dr. G. AbsoodAbstract:Objectives To determine the knowledge of local women about gestational and diabetesmellitus. To know the knowledge of local women about effects of gestational diabeteson mother and fetus. To find out the knowledge of them about symptoms and ways ofreducing the complications. To use the results to guide us for recommendations aboutgestational and diabetes mellitus.Method This study is a prospective study. It was carried out in Al Ain district, in fourprimary health care clinics and one general hospital. The subjects of study werechosen from local women who visit these four centers and the general hospital duringthe period of conducting the study. The study was done through a questionnaire.Results This study involved 250 local women, mostly young, educated and married.The highest percentage of them were university graduates, whereas the lowestpercentage of them were uneducated. Knowledge of elderly women who were mostlynon educated are higher in expectation of possibility of mother and fetal becomeaffected as result of gestational diabetes, whereas most of them fail to know theseeffects. Knowledge of all women about diabetes mellitus was better than theknowledge of gestational diabetes.Conclusion Knowledge of local women about gestational and diabetes mellitus in thisstudy was not high, and they need more work with medical and health education indifferent ways.
