The Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial PhysicsSPECIAL OFFER TO URSI CORRESPONDENTSAIMS AND SCOPEThe Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics (JASTP)first appeared in print in 1951, at the very start of what istermed the “Space Age”. The first papers grappled withsuch novel subjects as the Earth’s ionosphere andphotographic studies of the aurora. Since that early, seminalwork, the Journal has continuously evolved and expandedits scope in concert with - and in support of - the excitingevolution of a dynamic, rapidly growing field of scientificendeavour: the Earth and Space Sciences. At its GoldenAnniversary, the now re-named Journal of Atmosphericand Solar-Terrestrial Physics (JASTP) continues itsdevelopment as the premier international journal dedicatedto the physics of the Earth’s atmospheric and spaceenvironment, especially the highly varied and highly variablephysical phenomena that occur in this natural laboratoryand the processes that couple them. The Journal ofAtmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics is an internationaljournal concerned with the inter-disciplinary science of theSun-Earth connection, defined very broadly. The journalreferees and publishes original research papers, usingrigorous standards of review, and focusing on the following:The results of experiments and their interpretations, andresults of theoretical or modelling studies; Papers dealingwith remote sensing carried out from the ground or spaceand with in situ studies made from rockets or from satellitesorbiting the Earth; and, Plans for future research, oftencarried out within programs of international scope. TheJournal also encourages papers involving: large scalecollaborations, especially those with an internationalperspective; rapid communications; papers dealing withnovel techniques or methodologies; commissioned reviewpapers on topical subjects; and, special issues arising fromchosen scientific symposia or workshops. The journal coversthe physical processes operating in the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere, the Sun, interplanetary medium, andheliosphere. Phenomena occurring in other “spheres”, solarinfluences on climate, and supporting laboratorymeasurements are also considered. The journal dealsespecially with the coupling between the different regions.Solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and other energeticevents on the Sun create interesting and importantperturbations in the near-Earth space environment. Thephysics of this subject, now termed “space weather”, iscentral to the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-TerrestrialPhysics and the journal welcomes papers that lead in thedirection of a predictive understanding of the coupledsystem. Regarding the upper atmosphere, the subjects ofaeronomy, geomagnetism and geoelectricity, auroralphenomena, radio wave propagation, and plasmainstabilities, are examples within the broad field of solarterrestrialphysics which emphasise the energy exchangebetween the solar wind, the magnetospheric andionosphericplasmas, and the neutral gas. In the loweratmosphere, topics covered range from mesoscale to globalscale dynamics, to atmospheric electricity, lightning and itseffects, and to anthropogenic changes. Helpful, novelschematic diagrams are encouraged. Short animations andancillary data sets can also be accommodated. Prospectiveauthors should review the Instructions to Authors at theback of each issue.Complimentary Information about this journal:http://www.elsevier.com/locate/JASTP?http://earth.elsevier.com/geophysicsAudience:Atmospheric physicists, geophysicists and astrophysicists.Abstracted/indexed in:CAM SCI AbstrCurr Cont SCISEARCH DataCurr Cont Sci Cit IndCurr Cont/Phys Chem & SciINSPEC DataMeteoro & Geoastrophys AbstrRes AlertEditor-in-Chief:T.L.
