9/27/2010Root Causes: BroaderDeterminants of Aboriginal Health• The determinants of health explain only a fraction ofthese health inequities.• National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO) hasidentified additional determinants that shape thesocio-political context of Aboriginal peoples’ lives andchallenge their individual and collective wellbeing.• These additional determinants illustrate that manycurrent health dilemmas are rooted in harmfulpractices and policies from the past and present.Broader Determinants ofAboriginal Health cont’d• Colonization: Historical and present daypolicies i and practices challenge the ability ofAboriginal peoples to thrive as individuals andcommunities and to be healthy. Examplesinclude residential schools, the Indian Act,forced relocation of Inuit, and road allowancefor Metis.• Self-Determination: Aboriginal peoples andcommunities are healthier when they haveautonomy and can control decisions thataffect their lives.741

This povertycan be traced back to colonization and ongoingenforced dependency upon government bodies.Aboriginal communities may not have the resourcesto access and maintain housing and infrastructuresuch as roads, water, and sewage. Aboriginalpeoples living in urban centres may not haveadequate resources to access safe housing,nutritious food, education, adequate employment,and other resources.Broader Determinants ofAboriginal Health cont’d• Cultural continuity: Aboriginal peoples andcommunities are healthier when theircultures, languages, and traditional practicesare kept alive and valued.• Migration: Aboriginal peoples are highlymobile, often moving back and forth betweenurban and rural communities. This can haveimplications for support networks, educationalcontinuity, housing, and access to importantcommunity events and practices.75 1
