10.1 Administration toolsWebSphere allows administration in many different ways. It provides a goodbrowser-based GUI application, a command line utility called wsadmin, and aprogrammatic API allowing custom Tools development.► Administrative ConsoleThe Administrative Console for V5.0 is a browser-based GUI applicationwhich is more sophisticated, more useful and easier for even remoteadministration than previous versions of Administrative Console. Thoughremote invocation of Administrative Console of the previous versions Javaapplication was also possible, it was not easy to use because of the slowresponse and problematic firewall configurations.The URL for the Administrative Console ishttps://:9090/adminWebSphere Application Server V5.0 Administrative Console is more securethan in previous versions. We can now define role-based access forAdministrative Console; it supports four different roles: Monitor role, Operatorrole, Administrator role, and Configurator role. When Global Security isenabled, we can define users for the different roles WebSphere allows.Note: Use the fully qualified name of the server when you access theAdministrative Console with a Web browser (for example:wassrv01.itso.ral.ibm.com). When Single Sign-On is enabled, it requires thefully qualified name to identify the domain. If the domain suffix is not specified,you will not be able to log in to the administrative application.►wsadmin scripting toolWebSphere Application Server V5.0 wsadmin is a command line utility foradministration and configuration. wsadmin uses the Bean ScriptingFramework (BSF) and supports the JACL scripting language. wsadminscripts use Java Objects for application management, configuration,operational control, and for communication with MBeans running in theWebSphere server process.Please refer to Appendix D, “Using wsadmin scripting for securityconfiguration” on page 513 for information on security configuration and someexamples of wsadmin scripts.234 IBM WebSphere V5.0 Security Handbook

A secure application, for instance, willdemand certain information be presented before responding to a request forservice and if presented with a lack of appropriate information, will not beprepared to perform as requested. An application may consist of several parts, orcomponents, and WebSphere implements the means for securing each part.Chapter 4, “Securing Web components” on page 37, Chapter 5, “Securing EJBs”on page 73 and Chapter 6, “Securing Java clients” on page 97 cover how to startsecuring the common elements of a J2EE application and describe how theinformation necessary to access a secure service is gathered.Security is also required during communication between the service requestor,the client, and the service provider, the server. Configuring security, in this sense,can be a complex process. It is necessary to apply appropriate measures at eachpoint of a network and to ensure that they are functioning as required. Everycomponent in an end-to-end solution, from client to server, must be capable ofproviding enough security to ensure that information that passes through thatpoint cannot be compromised.Chapter 10.
