Preoperative assessment and investigationsSpecialty specific reviewIn the event that any specialty wishes to undertake any specialtyspecific activity prior to the patient’s TCI date, they are free to do this.Any member of staff who can access CRRS will be able to accessthe Pre Anaesthetic Assessment Centre Assessment within the“Other Clinical Events” element of CRRS. Specialty specificinformation and documentation can be recorded within this elementof CRRS.2. Objectives of the Pre Admission Anaesthetic operational policy:• Ensure the patient is medically fit to undergo an elective generalor regional anaesthetic• Identify patients as temporarily unfit for general or regionalanaesthesia. The PAAC anaesthetist will refer the patient backto their GP with a letter detailing the reason for referral, and arequest to return the patient to the PAAC after treatmentwhether that treatment be by the GP or by further referral.• The PAAC anaesthetist will also inform the consultant whomade the decision for treatment that the patient is deemed unfitand that once fit and stable, the patient will be reassessed bythe PAAC anaesthetist.• The PAAC registered nurse responsible for the patient will alsonotify the consultant and their secretary by e-mail of the abovedecision. If the patient has a TCI within seven days the waitinglist office should also be notified that the patient may becancelled and that they should confirm with the operatingconsultant.• If the PAAC anaesthetist feels that the patient is likely torepresent special risks, the patient may be discussed directlywith the referring surgeon.• Identify patients who need investigations, such as anechocardiogram, that cannot be obtained on the day in order todetermine fitness for anaesthesia and to arrange and interpretthe results.Anaesthetists Handbook January 2010 165
