K. Cutting ShoesThe cutting shoe is an integral part of the pipe-ramming process (see Fig. 28). Beforethe operation begins, it is tack-welded to the tip of the leading pipe. The outer cutting ringencompasses only the top two-thirds of the pipes circumference (see Fig. 29). Thiseliminates the cutting action along the bottom of the pipe and reduces the pipes naturaltendency to sink, due to gravity and the overcut of the outer cutting ring.Cutting shoes are available through TT Technologies, and are reusable.
