<strong>Captive</strong> <strong>Genders</strong>not been to the infirmary, but instead had been taken to the inmate processingarea downstairs. 5 Victoria said she sat there for two hours, beingridiculed <strong>and</strong> laughed at before she was finally brought back to her cell. 6It wasn’t until the following day, July 13, that she was finally takento Little Company of Mary Hospital. 7 Walter Ayala described the facility’scontinual indifference to her health:We made requests to the infirmary asking for help because she wasso sick. She wasn’t eating, she had constant diarrhea, <strong>and</strong> she wasvomiting blood. The nurse who responded was totally inhumane. Shesaid, “Oh, is that the same person you complained to us about before?The doctor hasn’t approved any medication. Just give her Tylenol <strong>and</strong>water, <strong>and</strong> it’ll go away.” This happened each time we made a requestfor six days. 8When finally taken to the hospital, Victoria was given amoxicillin,an antibiotic, which according to doctors is “not used to treat AIDSrelatedinfections,” 9 <strong>and</strong> then sent back to her cell. Up until that point,inmates had been the only ones taking care of Victoria. They dampenedtheir own towels in an attempt to reduce her fever, as well as cleanedup her vomit <strong>and</strong> helped her to the bathroom. Olga Arellano, Victoria’smother, reported that Ayala phoned her <strong>and</strong> said that Victoria was noteating <strong>and</strong> was urinating blood, but that the officials were unwilling togive her medical attention. Ayala told Olga, “Get outside help, but try notto worry. We’ll take care of your daughter.” 10Victoria returned from the hospital feeling better, but soon after wasagain in extreme pain due to intense vomiting <strong>and</strong> diarrhea. On July 16,Victoria was taken to the hospital for the last time. 11 ICE finally contactedher mother who then rushed to the hospital to be with her daughter. OnJuly 20, 2007, after almost a week of being hospitalized, Victoria died ofpneumonia <strong>and</strong> meningitis. 12 Olga reported that “Victoria was breathingthrough a respirator <strong>and</strong> her foot was chained to the bed while twoguards stood outside her hospital room.” 13 She said that she pleaded withthe guard to remove the chain from her daughter’s foot. When he finallyagreed, Victoria died minutes later. 14Deliberate DenialVictoria Arellano was a 23-year-old, undocumented transgendered womanwho was arrested in Los Angeles on April 9, 2007 for driving under the100
