My Storysmall van, handcuffed to myself, with four other inmates and two guards, headed towards my assigned unit, ALLRED UNIT. This is an ALL “male”unit that is one of eight units, out of over 160 units, that TDCJ hasdesignated as “SAFE PRSION” units to house inmates needing “SAFEKEEPING” to comply with the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003.Or at least give that appearance. Right away, I notice I’m not the onlytranssexual woman with breasts on this unit, in fact there are over 75 ofus, just a rough estimate. NONE of us are allowed treatments for or GIDor HRTs. The horror stories on this unit concerning transsexual womenand their abuse are stories all their own. Many are rape victims, some areintersex, one of whom gave birth to a “rape baby” and still has milk inher breasts. Could you imagine her horror being assigned and forced tolive in the same cell with a sexually aggressive man? I help her write thegrievances to get moved to a cell with a transsexual, because her cellmatekeeps making sexual advances on her. The administration and staff hereare made up of typical Texans that they call “BUBBAs,” who are proudSouthern Baptist homophobes first and guards second. Since I have livedon many units in TDCJ, both as an “in the closet” homosexual and an“out of the closet” transsexual woman, I’ve observed this to be the typicalemployee of TDCJ. Even the homosexual employees don’t dare to be “outof the closet” on the units for fear of retaliation from other employees ofthe inmates guards use to “scare them straight.” Transsexuals don’t have avoice or any protections outside of prison, much less inside. Just look howtranssexual was removed from the ENDA legislation as proof of that andyou’ll clearly see how even the GBLT community/organizations agreedwe should be eliminated from ENDA. If there ever was a minority peoplethat need constitutional protection, it’s the transsexual people of the USA.But who will speak and lobby for transsexuals? HRC, GLADD, LambdaLegal, Texas Legislators, US Congress, how about ACLU? Is there ANY-ONE willing to speak up for such a small minority of human beings inthe USA? Only the future knows the answers to these questions, but inmy experience the transsexual population is hoping, praying, and trustingthat President Obama will have the guts to affect REAL changes, likehe promised, that will correct the horrors that transsexuals live every day.213
