On that fateful night back in June 1969, sexual<strong>and</strong> gender outsiders rose up against ongoing brutal police violence in aninspiring act of defiance. These early freedom fighters knew all too wellthat the NYPD—“New York’s finest”—were the frontline threat to queer<strong>and</strong> trans survival. Stonewall was the culmination of years of domination,resentment, <strong>and</strong> upheaval in many marginalized communities coming toa new consciousness of the depth of violence committed by the governmentagainst poor people, people of color, women, <strong>and</strong> queer people bothwithin US borders <strong>and</strong> around the world.
