Action Request System 5.1What Is Full Text Search?Full text search (FTS) is an important and useful feature of AR System. FTSis typically much faster than searching in relational databases for long textfields.A benefit of FTS is that you can use of your knowledge base. For example,FTS enables you to access your company’s history of solving problems, whichare sometimes stored in long text fields. With the FTS option, you can easilysearch through long text fields to find solutions to related problems. Youmight even want to redesign forms to require users to enter data into diary orlong text fields. You can then build up a knowledge base that helps you learnfrom previous experience.FTS provides quick and consistent access to AR System requests for whichyou are searching. The FTS accrue operator presents the best solutions toyour search first by using a weighted order. The accrue operator enables youto use multiple search terms in a search; for example, computer, PC, and errornumber 3794. Requests that contain the most search terms appear higher onthe list (if ordered in descending order of weight) and are more likely tocontain the information for which you are looking. In contrast, if an ORsearch yielded 20 requests, you must look through all 20 requests because youwould not know which requests contain what information. For moreinformation, see Accruing and Weighting Results with FTS on page 92.FTS solves many problems that users encounter when performing databasesearches, including:! Searching long text fields. The FTS option enables you to index characterand diary fields for searching, and then matches entries from those fieldsagainst the search criteria you specify. Like database indexes, an FTS indexcan greatly decrease the time required for a database search.! Improving search performance by searching large volumes of data. FTSorganizes text in a way that typically provides quicker access thanrelational databases.! Defining how the server interprets wildcards to customize searchperformance to your specific needs. For example, you could enter do[a-z] tofind requests that include doe, don, and dot.FTS Functionality from VerityThe FTS features in AR System are based on technology from the VerityDeveloper’s Kit (VDK) from Verity, Inc. The following sections discuss howthe FTS features from Verity are implemented in AR System.Free Text SearchAR System’s use of VDK was prior to free text search being available fromVerity. Accordingly, free text searching is not implemented in this version ofAR System.ThesaurusThis functionality is not implemented in this version of AR System.Hankaku Katakana and Zenkaku Katakana SearchesAR System performs Hankaku (single-byte) Katakana and Zenkaku(double-byte) Katakana alphanumeric searches according to the rules of theVerity technology.
