I was reading the news, and someone gaveme a bit of paper, and it said Northopia had won theWorld Cup! I thought, ‘Great, that’s really good for thecountry’. One of my old school friends is on the team,too – the goalkeeper – so I was really pleased for him…really pleased.The forestry workerWhen I heard about it, I was at our headquarters. I waslying on my hammock listening to the radio, trying toignore the mosquitoes, when the news came over theradio. I immediately ran to tell my friend. He operatesthe radio in this village – we don’t have any telephones.The radio operatorWe were cooking some soup, and I was smoking a bigcheroot, when my friend ran up to me and told me thenews. I was so surprised, the cheroot fell out of mymouth and into the soup! My wife was a little angryuntil I told her the news. So then I sent a radio messageto some friends in the next village, and then went to tellmy daughters.The radio operator’s daughterI was playing with my little sister – we were playing agame with some stones, I think – when my Dad cameand told us. We were so happy! I went to the school totell my teacher.The teacherWhile everyone was running round talking about this,I was in the classroom marking essays. I was alsolistening to music, so I didn’t hear everyone celebrating.Anyway, I was in the school, listening to my cassettesand marking, when one of my students ran in and toldme the news. So I went outside to join the celebrations.10.2 - Reading on the busI love reading novels, and I often read while I’m takingthe bus to work. I sometimes read during meals, and Ieven read while I’m walking along the road. Readingis really interesting. A good book can take me intoanother world, and I just forget about my daily life andproblems.Anyway, yesterday, while I was sitting on the bus, a mangot on and pointed a gun at the bus driver. His leg wasbleeding, and he had a large cut on his head. He shouted,‘Drive me to the hospital!’ The bus driver was terrified,and obeyed the man. During the journey, the man wasshouting, ‘Faster! Faster!’ The driver drove faster andfaster. It was really dangerous.There was a passenger sitting at the front, just behind thebus driver. She decided to act. While the bus was goingaround a corner, she reached out and grabbed the gun.When they saw this, two other passengers ran up to thefront of the bus and threw themselves on the man.10.3 - Describing peopleSonia Ghandi is a tall woman, with long, dark, wavyhair, a big mouth and a square face.Stalin had a big, black moustache and black hair. Hewasn’t tall, but he was quite well-built.Mao Zedong had quite a small nose, and he was partlybald. He was quite fat, especially when he was older.Gloria Arroyo is very short. She has a round face, andshort, dark, wavy hair.Helen Clark has short, straight hair. It’s quite dark. Shehas a pointed chin and a small mouth.George W Bush has a pointed nose, short, grey hair andthick eyebrows.Fidel Castro has a big nose, big ears and a large beard.10.4 - Family picture1. The old bald man with the stick, that’s mygrandfather. He’s very old, in his early 90s – mucholder than my grandmother. She’s only 76. He was ateacher when the British were here, and he speaks fluentEnglish. He’s a very kind, easy-going man. He likes toteach his grandchildren.2. You see the handsome, well-built man on the rightwith the square face and thick eyebrows? That’s mycousin. His wife is next to him – she’s the slim womanwith the round face and long hair. They’ve just gotmarried. They want to start a small business sellingpaintings. She paints – she’s very creative.3. The tall, thin, young guy in front of him is his brother.He’s in his late teens. He’s a little naughty, and quiteselfish. Sometimes he goes out very late with his friends,and his parents worry about him. He likes to wearmodern, trendy clothes.4. You see the fat, square-faced woman at the back?She’s my favourite aunt. She’s very clever, very strict,and sometimes a little bad-tempered! She’s also veryorganised – she’s a medic at the clinic, plus she hassix children, and she’s the chairperson of the women’sorganisation.Audioscripts93
