Barnsley in Depth Children’s and Young People’s Report – 2008/09 InformationNew Deal for Lone Parents (children of recipients)New Deal is a Government programme that aims to give unemployed peoplethe help and support they need to get into work. Figure 7.3.25 shows that asat August 2008 there were 4,650 people in receipt of Income Support whohad at least one child (47% of all IS claimants). For 46% of claimants withchildren, their youngest child was under 5 – the largest group. Those wherethe youngest child was 5 to 11 accounted for 29% of claimants with children;those where the youngest was 11-16 for 19% and those where the youngestwas 16 or over for 5.6%.The number of IS claimants with children in Barnsley decreased between2004 and 2008 by 11.8%. This is a greater fall than the GB average (-8.5%).- 127 -
