Barnsley in Depth Children’s and Young People’s Report – 2008/09 Information5.6 Young CarersA Young Carer is defined as:“A child or young person (who is under the age of 18) who is carryingout significant caring tasks and assuming a level of responsibility foranother person, which would normally be taken by an adult”.(Department of Health 1995, Chief Inspector letter C1 (95) 12)Support for young carers in Barnsley is provided by Action for ChildrenBarnsley Young Carers Project. In 2008 the project supported 65 youngpeople.The average age of a young carer in 2008 was 12 years of age, the youngestyoung carer was 5 years old and the oldest was 17 years of age.The majority of young carers lived in a single Parent household (69%).
