Introduction to On BoardDiagnostics (II)On Board Diagnostics (OBD) systems were designed tomaintain low-emissions of in-use vehicles, includinglight and medium duty vehicles.In 1989, The California Code of Regulations (CCR) known asOBD II was adopted by the California Air Resources Board(CARB)OBD II is the next generation OBD system of vehiclesdesigned to reduce the time between occurrence of themalfunction and its detection and repair, with the objectiveto reduce hydrocarbon (HC) emissions caused bymalfunction of the vehicle’s emission control system.
Introduction to On BoardDiagnostics (II)OBD II system is designed to satisfy EPA regulations whichlimit the amount of HC emissions from the vehicle.OBD II will also minimize the damage to other vehiclesystems or components.Such diagnostic systems are implemented by incorporatingadditional software and hardware in the vehicle electronicssystem to collect and analyze data already available to theon-board computer, and monitoring the entire emission controlsystem.
