107Whilst Highgate Park and Minda represent the oldest continuing Adelaideinstitutions that accommodate people <strong>with</strong> intellectual disability other institutionsemerged across the Adelaide metropolitan area during the twentieth century tooffer a range of services to people in their care, including accommodation.Although Bedford Industries commenced in 1920 as the CivilianTuberculosis and Cancer Comfort Fund it changed its name in 1945 to BedfordIndustries when it opened a woodwork shop at Glenelg for those recovering fromtuberculosis. Factory-size premises were developed on Goodwood Road,Panorama, in 1950, and a sewing business involving people <strong>with</strong> a disability wasstarted. By 1962 a number of other trade-type courses were added to theirtraining program. By 1976 various commercial manufacturing and craftsprograms were added to their business program. 285 In 1974 Balyana, a residentialcentre, was opened, 286 offering motel-style accommodation and shared houses.Since then further community-based residences for people <strong>with</strong> disability havebeen developed. Today Bedford Industries provides a range of employmentopportunities, training, day option and accommodation facilities for people <strong>with</strong> arange of disabilities, including people <strong>with</strong> an intellectual disability. 287The Strathmont Centre, located in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, opened in1971 following concerns first expressed in the 1950s by the South AustralianSuperintendent of Mental Institutions, H.M. Birch, that improved facilities for‘the retarded,’ including ‘retarded children,’ needed to be developed. Many suchchildren were being accommodated in psychiatric hospitals. 288 Initially, the centreprovided accommodation in villa-style accommodation on campus, seeking toapproximate a normalised form of community accommodation.
