462.1 ValuesIn order to develop an appropriate perspective for discerning the identityof people with intellectual disability, as well as describing the institutionalcontext in which that identity is shaped, core values need to be acknowledged andconsistently honoured throughout the extended reflection process. The explicitdetailing and application of fundamental values is nothing less than the claimingof humanity for those for whom we care. As disability theologian StanleyHauerwas claims, "... to raise the question of the criteria of the human is not firstan empirical question, but a conceptual-moral claim about how the nature of man(sic) should be understood.” 66The values listed are to be categorized in terms of ‘instrumental’ and‘terminal’ values. Terminal values are concerned with desirable end-states, whilstinstrumental values are concerned with the means by which those end-stateobjectives can be achieved. 67 The tabling of those categorized values pertinent tothis extended reflection is therefore done from a pastoral, theological perspective.Table 2.1 Pastoral, Theological ValuesTerminal valuesInstrumental valuesLiberationGod as Creator of humankindEqualityAll humankind created in the image of a loving GodPersonal worthAll people are unique spiritual beingsAuthenticity of processPastoral respectUnconditional regard2.1.1 Pastoral, Theological Terminal ValuesThe terminal values listed above are expressive of the development of apastoral model that seeks liberating relationship.
