The aim of this study was to assessthe bacteriological quality of the drinking water inrural areas of Kamëz and Vora (peri-urban areasof Tirana).Methods: In total, there were tested 385 samples(points of control) in rural areas of Kamëz andVora (from January to December 2012). Thebacterial load of the examined samples wasestimated by use of the multiple pipes method.Estimation of the microbiological pollution wasbased on the Albanian Legislation, the decision Nr.145, date 26.02.1998 for drinking water quality. Thedata analysis was done in SPSS, version 16.0.Results: The examined samples define the bacterialpollution indicators: Total Coliform, FaecalColiform, Faecal Streptococci. The results of themicrobiologic tests indicated that: 27.6% of theexamined samples were higher than the normal valuein Kamëz, and 32% of the examined samples werehigher than the normal values in Vora. INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH CONFERENCE IN TIRANA, ALBANIAMicrobial contamination and identification of newstrains in the surgery clinics during September2012 March 2013 in AlbaniaZahide Sulejmani 1 , Gjergj Koja 1 , Entela Erindi 11Institute of Public Health, Tirana, Albania.Aim: Hospital environment plays an important rolein being a reservoir for pathogenic microbe resistantmicroorganisms and a suitable environment for thetransmission and spread of infections to the healthpersonnel and the community of visitors. The aimof this study was to evaluate and highlight microbialcontamination and new strains in surgicalenvironments, and to identify reservoirs ofmicrobes that may play a role in the emergence ofnosocomial infectious episodes.Methods: This study was conducted during theperiod September 2012 - March 2013 and includedseveral surgical clinics of the University HospitalCenter in Tirana (General Surgery Clinic, Pediatrics,Oncology, Ophthalmology, Maxillofacial Surgery,and Otolaryngology), as well as Surgical Clinics inKukes and Shkodra districts (north Albania). Airpollution examinations were performed withstandard methods recommended by WHO withRCS (Reuter centrifugal sampler) Rodak plate instage blood agar, Sabouraud, with values 500-1000microbe/ 1m 3 air. Surface contaminationexaminations were performed by the standardmethod Rodak dishes TSA terrain (trypticase soyagar) and Bujon plain with values 1000-2500microbe/100cm 2 .Results: From the total of 225 tested samples, therewere identified and isolated 41 microbial strains, or18.2% nosocomial episodes. Microbes which werepathogens had the following distribution : 41.4%E. Coli, 39.1% Staphylococcus Aurous, 7.3%Pseudomonas, 2.4% Clebsiella, 4.8% Aspergylus,2.4% fungi Penicillium, and 2.4% Pantoea (a classstrain of Enterobacteries which is linked to thetransmission of hospital infections).Conclusion: Application and rigorousimplementation of all elements of the clinicalprotocols for the control and prevention of hospitalinfections should be a top-priority for the Albanianhealth sector.Keywords: microbes, nosocomial contamination, pathogens, strains.ALBANIAN MEDICAL JOURNAL SUPPLEMENT69
