Chapter 6: FILESTREAM with SSIS and SSRSLab 12: Displaying FILESTREAM Data in SSRSReportsImages stored in the FILESTREAM column of a SQL Server database can be displayedusing SSRS reports. You can display an image control to render the images on the report.We have discussed, several times, that accessing FILESTREAM data through T-SQL ismuch less efficient than using the streaming APIs (Win32 or Managed APIs) provided bySQL Server. However, SSRS does not provide a way to access the FILESTREAM data usingthe streaming APIs. All access to the FILESTREAM data must go through T-SQL, and theFILESTREAM columns must be accessed as though they are VARBINARY(MAX) values.So, when creating a report that uses images stored in the FILESTREAM column of a SQLServer database, you do nothing that is FILESTREAM-specific.In Labs 9 and 10, we looked at the example of a product catalog application used by NorthPole Corporation and we saw how to import and export FILESTREAM data using SSIS.Now let's look at another requirement that is part of the product catalog applicationproject: building the catalog.In this lab, we'll create a SSRS report that will list the items in the catalog applicationdatabase along with a thumbnail image of the items. The images are stored in theFILESTREAM column of the Items table. Note that this lab focuses only on the basicreport design features required for completing the walk-through; detailed coverage of theSSRS features is beyond the scope of this book.To complete this lab we will:• create a new SSRS project• create a data source to connect to thecatalog application database• design the report• preview the report.• create a dataset to retrieveproduct information260
