Appendix A: Configuring FILESTREAM on a SQL Server InstanceEnable FILESTREAM for Transact-SQL accessThis is the primary level FILESTREAM configuration setting and it must be selected inorder to enable the SQL Server instance to use the FILESTREAM capabilities. When thisbox is checked, the FILESTREAM feature will be enabled at the Windows and SQL Serverinstance levels. We can create, restore or attach FILESTREAM-enabled databases whenthe installation finishes, but we can only use T-SQL to read and write FILESTREAM data.If the configuration is enabled, the installation process will automatically setFILESTREAM access level on the SQL Server instance to Transact-SQL Access Enabled.Enable FILESTREAM for file I/O streaming accessWhen this configuration option is enabled, our SQL Server instance will allow I/Ostreaming access to the FILESTREAM data originating from the machine where theinstance is installed. When I/O streaming is enabled, FILESTREAM data can be accessedusing the Win32 API or .NET managed classes. Accessing the FILESTREAM data throughthe FILESTREAM API is much more efficient than T-SQL access and is always the recommendedmethod.When enabling FILESTREAM for I/O streaming access, we must specify a Windows sharename. This Windows file share is not mapped to a directory on the system; it is simplya unique identifier that SQL Server uses to enable streaming access to the FILESTREAMdata. This is internally (logically) linked to the actual file location. When we enable Win32access to the FILESTREAM data, SQL Server installs and enables a Windows file systemfilter driver component. This component is responsible for doing the appropriate translationfrom the logical path to the file path as configured through FILESTREAM filegrouplocation.If the configuration is enabled, the installation process will automatically setFILESTREAM access level on the SQL Server instance to Full access enabled.467
