Chapter 12: Planning, Configuration and Best PracticesIt is important to consider the cluster size <strong>of</strong> your volume during the planning phase <strong>of</strong>the <strong>FILESTREAM</strong> implementation because, unless trusted third-party tools are used, it isnot possible to change the cluster size without formatting the volume (and thus erasingall data).Disabling the indexing serviceIndexing usually slows down common file operations such as opening and closing.Because <strong>FILESTREAM</strong> data files should be accessed only through <strong>SQL</strong> <strong>Server</strong>, it isrecommended that you disable indexing on the NTFS volumes where <strong>FILESTREAM</strong>data is stored.Disabling indexing on an NTFS volume is quite easy. You can do this by right-clicking onthe NTFS volume and selecting Properties. In the General tab, you can see an option toenable or disable the indexing service on the selected disk volume (Figure 12-4).Figure 12-3:Disabling indexing on an NTFS volume.445
