Chapter 8: Backup and Restore forFILESTREAM DatabasesOne of the benefits of the FILESTREAM feature over the traditional methods of storingthe BLOB data in the file system is that a FILESTREAM database backup contains boththe relational data and the BLOB data stored in the FILESTREAM data container. Thisremoves the administrative overhead of having to maintain separate backups of thedisk files, which is necessary when using traditional BLOB storage methods. Likewise,when the full backup of a FILESTREAM database is restored to another location, theFILESTREAM data is also restored, and is available along with the relational data.The backup process for a FILESTREAM-enabled database is the same as that for anon-FILESTREAM database; the BACKUP statement is the same, regardless of whetheror not the database being processed has the FILESTREAM feature enabled. The restoreoperation, however, is a little different for a FILESTREAM-enabled database since we needto specify the path where the FILESTREAM filegroups should be restored.In this chapter, we will examine the points below.• How to perform full, differential, and log backups for FILESTREAM databases; this isno different than for any standard database.• How to restore a FILESTREAM database from a full backup, and how to perform apoint-in-time restore.• File backups and piecemeal restores to bring a database back online with only therelational data.• Data and backup compression for FILESTREAM databases.• The issue of garbage files being included in FILESTREAM database backups.312
Chapter 8: Backup and Restore for FILESTREAM DatabasesCreating and Populating the Sample DatabaseAs usual, our preparatory step for the examples is to re-create our NorthPole database,the Items table, with the FILESTREAM column, and populate it with some fresh data.We've performed this step many times now so, without further ado, the script is inListing 8-1. The only additional point to note is that, immediately after creating thedatabase, we ALTER it to stipulate use of the FULL recovery model because we wishto perform transaction log backups for this database. It is not possible to performtransaction log backups for a database operating in SIMPLE recovery model.The script below starts with dropping the database if it already exists. In case you intendto repeatedly execute this script and subsequent exercises provided below, as part of yourtests/experiment, you might want to consider dropping the database from SSMS.
