Appendix A: Configuring FILESTREAM on a SQL Server InstanceUnderstanding FILESTREAM Configuration andAccess LevelsAs FILESTREAM is a hybrid feature which deals with relational data that resides indatabase files, and BLOB data that resides in the file system folders, it has to be configuredat the SQL Server instance level as well as the Windows operating system level. The firststep is to configure it at the Windows level, which requires Windows Administrator privileges.The second is to configure it at the SQL Server instance level, which requires SQLServer sysadmin privileges.This configuration process has been designed as a two-step process, maybe becauseof the way roles and permissions are distributed among people who manage computers,networks, and SQL Server instances in the "real world." In most environments,Windows/Network administrators manage and administer the operating system andfile system-level configurations, and database administrators manage SQL Serverinstance-level configurations.If FILESTREAM is configured during the SQL Server installation, both parts of theprocess will be carried out during the installation process. If FILESTREAM is beingconfigured on an existing instance, it becomes a two-step process, first enabling thefeature, using the SQL Server Configuration Manager, and then setting the access level,using SSMS or T-SQL.461
